1. He isn't cruel. You have a little perspective about him. He loves us and only gives us challenges to prove to him that we are worthy to return to live with him in heaven.
2. The christian god was created by downtrodden people with no hope for revenge against their oppressors. It's basically wish fulfillment - we can't punish them but our god will (sometime in the future or in a future life).
