  1. has to be the dell man, i used to have an hp and it lasted 2 years. I got a dell 4 years ago and it hasnt failed me once. dells are reliable
  2. Both of these laptops will do what you want. These are both consumer-grade laptops, so they will both have about the same lifespan. About the only difference that might matter is that the battery on the Dell looks like it might last longer, but these ratings aren't really apples-to-apples type comparisons (companies do their own testing and may do different tasks to determine average battery life).
  3. Well, I've got the first color Mac portable and 2 Toshiba Satellites, one with Win98 and the other has WinNT shoehorned on it. All sitting on a shelf in my closet. I don't use any of them. I did get Win95 running one day to make sure some software would be compatiable. Longevity don't count on a laptop, let me tell you. The problem is: I don't want to spend the money on batteries for any of them. I hate how fast the laptops build up resistance to charging the battery with amps -- we leave them plugged into the wall al the time. When I worked at Dell, over half the workers in the Round Rock plant were temps with 4 days training. Nobody wanted to be in laptop production because laptops was being moved to China. Later, I hated Dell because on their desktops they use their own ROM chip flash which complicates drivers as the OS of the machine gets upgraded. HP also relies on temps. If you want quality, you will have to pay for it from another company besides these two. The Dell is touting how great you can game. The HP has optimized the AMD 64 chip. THAT's the choice, the real choice. I like the AMD64. I am comfortable with 64-bit software. I have no need to play games. I was impressed at BestBuy's lineup of HP with the AMD64 installed with various sizes of RAM. However BestBuy wouldn't let me try Linux from a CD I brought with me. =========== I say, HP, 4GIG, AMD 64-Bit, you can get OpenOffice later instead of MS Office. The HP you have to take Windows, which adds to the price. If Dell will cut you a deal with AMD64 and Linux installed, then contact me back about all their add-ons. If you can wait after Christmas, Dell and HP let all their Temps go....
  4. I personally have had a HP for over 3 years so far and I have had no problems, BUT my customers that have had DELL have had problems on the newer DELL laptops, one who had one for less than 6 months and it crashed and they would not cover it. another customer has had 2 of that brand of laptop in LESS than the 3 years I have had my HP. I also have had Dell go "Phishing" on my computer before.
