computer acting really funny after a restart?

ok my internet was running really bad like after 5 mins the page wouldn't refresh or anythang so i said what the hey lets do a restart, when i did and it came back up my theme was on windows XP but now is on classic and the theme is gone, also i tryed to go to windows updates to fix it but it each time i got to start all programs window updates the page will say internet explorer cant be displayed i even tryed typing it in on my address bar and it wouldn't work , i had no internet or anythang but i got the internet back finally, I also play a game called Puzzle Pirates and it wont show any pictures of anythang on it. i cant fix the theme i can do nothing and im getting really pissed off and nothing is working on it plz somone help, It is a Acer laptop and i tryed to do a system restore and it didn't change a thang on my computer, also a few days ago i got a message from my AVG saying virus blocked so main problem is lack of theme and picture display problems, please somone help me

1. Not to be knocking what a lot of people seem to think is a good anti-virus program "For free", it may not be as bullet proof as one may think. I have worked on 5 different computers , all running AVG software and had to remove the hard drives, install them as slave drives in another system and run a Norton Virus scan on them. When all was said and done, keep in mind 5 HDD's, I had found over 65 major viruses, over 100 minor viruses/data miners, etc. All of these computers were experiencing similiar problems, extremely slow, things disappearing from the desktop, access to the internet near impossible, unable to load or run any other anti-virus program to determine the possibilitiy of a virus. I also used, after the fact, Microsofts Malicious software removal tool, you can search it on Microsofts site. If it will let you download and install it, it may be a good first attempt at determining the possibility.
