Why can I not see display pictures on MSN?

I do not have the new version, I don't like. Recently got my computer reformatted and I have the 8.5 version... I have my settings to where it shows other peoples display pictures, however everyone is that little blue man. Do I need some kind of flash player or anything like that? Any help would be appreciated.

1. nothing related to your MSN version. It might be that your contacts don't have a display picture, therefore the "little blue man" as you call it, will appear because your contacts decided to not have a display picture. no, flash player is not required..
