Should I take a F1 serval Cat.?
My friend called me from london saying he had 1. I saw these beautiful large cats on the internet and after doing a bit of reading about them they seem amazing. I love the size of them. Do they really make good pets because they are half wild lepord?? Its nearly 2 feet tall would it just kill me?.... and my lovebirds? I found these pics http://www.vulkaner.no/n/africa/somalia/serval.jpg http://animal-world.com/Cats/AfricanServal/sallym_med_med.jpg

- No - the average person should never own a 1/2 wild cat. Only those with experience and know how to really handle, feed and care for one of the "exotic" cats. I have plenty of experience in caring for cats and breeding purebreds and I would not want to own a 1/2 wild cat!
- noooooooooooo
- No. Those cats need experienced owners or be overseen by a breeder who can educate the new owner. They require a special diet and cannot be treated by a veterinarian as if they were a normal cat. There is evidence that regular vaccines are not safe for them. The lovebirds would be Fancy Feast for it in no time. Cats cannot turn off their prey instincts. There are other large breeds that are safe and easier to care for. Take a look at the Maine Coon, Ragdoll, and the Norwegian Forest Cat. All large breeds. I have a Maine Coon and trust me, when he was younger he was tough enough to handle. He's been dieted down to a steady 18-20 pounds now, but he's still very tough to pick up and move due to his actual body size. Everything we buy for him has to be super extra large and if he gets in one of his little moods, I'm the only person that can handle him. I couldn't ask for a more loving cat, but he has to be handled by someone who knows how to.
- They're not leopard, they're serval, a totally different animal. Your lovebirds won't stand a chance. My best suggestion would be to go to YahooGroups and join up with one of the specific serval groups over there.
- I would suggest that you not bring a wild animal in your home if you have no experience. These cats are too wild to live in the average home. It probably won't kill you but it's bites and scratches are WAY worse than the average cat. Plus, if a child were to visit your home, you risk the endangerment of that child. And, of course, your birds probably wouldn't survive the first night.
- No. It wouldn't kill you. It would just be plain mean and wrong. Serval's are meant to live in the wild. If it has rabies then it can kill you and you can get a non domesticated cat shots, so that would be a problem for you.
- i would question where your friend got this cat to be able to give it away they cost about 12000 pounds to buy, and you really do ned to know what you are doing your birds would be a tasty treat, having an ordinary cat can be an expencive, a specilist cat would empty your bank account very quickly. I think having a large cat is not something you just get because you like the look of them, so my answer would be no.
