Well, I was an owner of a 19 inch Samsung 953BW but I'm now an owner of a 19 inch LG Flatron W1952TQ. I returned the Samsung because the black level was crap when jacking into my Xbox 360 but was awesome when switched over to the computer. It was like it was completely washed out, whether the black level on the 360 was set to "expanded" mode and the monitor was set to a low gamma/brightness or not. The LG, on the other hand has been performing pretty nicely and only mildly suffers from a faded black level. However, I have noticed that even though I have optimally configured my display to my liking and according to my reference chart JPEG , this monitor (like the Samsung) constantly and automatically is adjusting my brightness based on events onscreen. Whether I am watching a movie on my PC, or I am playing on my 360, does it do this. It becomes annoying when it decides to lift the brightness in dark areas of my game/movie, because it makes the picture look muddy and washed out. I have determined, that when there's a bright scene (e.g. car headlights/sun) the monitor dims the picture, when there's a completely black scene/dark scene, it lifts the brightness and gamma considerably and this has ruined gaming experience quite a bit. One such example is; I was playing a game and I had gotten to a point where I went into a tunnel that you are not intended to see in at all and you are suppose to hold out/evade enemy in the pitch black until your buddy/support meets up to you with their vehicle headlights to help you out. These monitors cranked up the brightness so much everything (including the black) was faded and the cave was not dark at all, completely ruining any surprise. You can imagine how much this ruins games like Dead Space where you almost always in the dark and you are not intended to see very well. It's like, these monitors are trying to auto-calculate on it's own and it gets annoying and screws up the black level. This happened on both monitors whether I am in user/custom mode or in one of the preset modes e.g. movie, text, sports, normal etc. Does anyone know why these monitors do this? And what this feature may be called so I can disable it? Also, this happens whether I am in DVI or VGA mode.
