What is the name, if any, of the funny pictures with a black background, white caption, and a picture?

You see them everywhere. There's a pic, with a word in bold pertaining to the picture, and a funny comment under the bold word, and a white frame around the picture. I was curious, do they have a name? It's difficult to explain them without a name... so i was just curious.

Then the poster format was turned into a internet fad by a website called Despair.com and since then has become a popular way of changing the context of picture from something that is awkward to ridiculously funny.
