My Funny Picture

Why is a man in his underwear funny while a woman in her underwear vulgar and sexualised?

I mean if u come across someone's display picture with say Homer Simpson in his underwear, it would be funny for most people, no one would find anything sexual about it. You come across say Marge Simpson in a bikini, and its seen as vulgar and not funny the way the homer pic was. In most cartoons, showing a male cartoon having his shorts torn or his body stripped in public is funny, but a female body having her body stripped, not so much. (Not generalising, not saying ALL peopel think so, not saying women are "oppressed", not saing im a lesbian feminist, not saying any other such thing u might be about to post) Is there something in women's body which makes its visibility sexual, while men's body visibility has no sexual connotations and thus is found to be funny? Blue Eyed LOL at the question mark

  1. 'Woman in her underwear is vulgar'? Who said that? I doubt it.
  2. I need some pictures of the woman in her underwear for comparison.
  3. Because it's the way it is.
  4. personally i like women in their underwear lol
  5. cus its hot lol
  6. i think is that a personal opinion, especially depending on your gender and sexual preferance. men in underwear can also be sexy and women in underwear can also be gross or funny. it just depends on where you stand there is no right or wrong
  7. Yeah it looks funny because it looks different.
  8. I think it is relative to the context........ And women are pitied more than men. No one in their right mind can deny that. I have seen sexual images of men in their underwear's too. Open-chested and all.....
  9. Because men's bodies, in general, are not perceived as sexy. And I seldom find a "woman in her underwear vulgar and sexualised", if she's well-appointed & tastefully dressed, it is quite attractive.
  10. I'm trying to figure that out my self I mean. Men can look just fine in their underwear even if they have a potbelly and all, meanwhile women should look pefect and sexyand like, obviously its funny when you see a man running down the street with underwear on,if you saw a women guys be turnign there heads for sure,or just get disgusted? I hate this. By my knowledge I think it's just because it's a way to attract men. I mean look at animals the male has to shake his stuff to get a women. For humans a women kinda has to shake theirs?.. I dont know.
  11. the thing is, the way our society works is that men have a big impact on comedy. therefore if homer is in his underwear it is funny because it is made to seem funny by putting a hole in the butt. then again when marge wears underwear she is usually in a see though coat and it is made to seem sexual. now that that was established, every time people see Marge Simpson in her underwear, it is a sexual thing. plus it is made to seem that men are vulgar making it ok to be in underwear when women are gentle and kind and clean so it is not ok.
  12. it is simply a double standard. When guys do certain things, such as be nude, its funny and no one usually looks at them sexually, nor is it vulgar, but as soon as yu see a woman naked, its a crime. The same as when a guy has alot of girls its ok and there praised for it, but if a girl has alot of boifriends, shes a hoe. Sometimes our society is wrong!!
  13. Homer has a huge beer gut and always needs a shave...who would find that attractive? No one. That's why it is seen as funny. Now, Marge has an hour glass shape, I'm sure if she had a beer gut, and plumbers crack no one would find that attractive. It would be considered funny too. I'm also sure that if Homer had a six pack and he would also be seen in a sexual aspect.
  14. Tell that to Daniel Craig (James Bond actor). He was furious at the British Academy Awards for all the salacious jokes the Host made at his expense re his emergence from the ocean in his speedos in that scene a la Ursula Andress. All the jokes ignited uproarious laughter and applause from the audience due to the sexual innuendo. Apparently he snapped Judi Dench's head off in a grumpy tantrum at the after party.
  15. Not to me.
  16. Men will see almost nudity and get turned on, almost without fail. Women will see almost nudity and laugh. Don't forget that men want sex and that which is almost nude is sexy. It has to be said, I find that laughter a major turn off. If a woman laughs at my pants when I'm disrobing in front of her, I'll be inclined to put it all back on and leave. She's obviously not that interested in the sex part, or she's incredibly thoughtless. Two reasons I shouldn't have sex with her. Bob
  17. well actuall yes there is something that people look for on a womans body, especially someone like Marge Simpson. Homer and Marge have the bodies that they have for a reason which is to please the public. Unfortunately during the time that that these people were made is was the general idea that women were the sexual icons, more than men. So of course if you look at those you you notice that that Marge is supposed to be sexulized, I mean just look at the type of underwear that she has one verse the type that Homer has one). to better emphasis this you can just go into a victoria secret and see how many different type of sexual undergarmets which exist specifically for women and just try and find at least half of those available for men. However there is another way to look at this I did state that Homer and Marges body ar the way they are on purpose because well they are. If you were to find a physically fit male, one with a 6-8 a pack, the "y line" (outlining the legs near the hips) with great pecks then you will notice that he will be sexualized as well. Perhaps not to the same degree as a a women, but in a similar way non the less. Just go look on and A&F clothing website if you want to see
  18. a guy is funny in his underwear because there's nothing we've been taught is sexual in it, its sociably ok for a man to be completely shirtless in public, while a women topless is grotesque, and even if she's in a bra or bikini, its still sexual in nature to to the amount of skin. the deal with the stripped in public, is because a man has "power" so when he's stripped, its funny because there's nothing sexual in it, but a women stripped represents rape, a taking away of her power.
  19. Just like to point out, its an ATTRACTIVE women in her underwear is sexualised, as is an ATTRACTIVE man!
  20. I think this tells us more about your perception of the body! Personally, it depends on the situation. A man in his underwear can be very sexy indeed, or quite funny, or even repulsive. A woman in her underwear can be sexy, or funny, or repulsive. I don't actually think nudity is ever "vulgar", for me, vulgar is in poor taste or bad manners, and nudity never makes me feel like that. Maybe I'm more comfortable with nudity than most... Think of the Beckham ad for Armani, Becks is not my cup of tea, but it was definitely a sexualised image, and not a humorous one. Another example is the Aero Bubbles advert.
  21. women in their underwear is not vulgar. but women un their underwear is sensual. and the right guy running around in his underwear is sensual too, sorry Homer doesn't stand a chance.
  22. You greatly overgeneralize a very complex subject, a hot sexy man showing off his body is just as erotic to someone who appreciates men as is a hot sexy woman showing off hers to someone who appreciates women, done differently it can be vulgar and offensive, even obscene, it's a matter of context and presentation. The same is true of humor, it's a matter of timing, context, and presentation, not simply of the gender of the people involved.
  23. It depends on the context of the image. This image of a man in his underwear isn't supposed to be funny. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_V2-0sMmaIk4/Sd2VA0_LnSI/AAAAAAAABzQ/r3IRiO0_XO0/s400/men%27s+underwear.jpeg Nor is this one. http://www.sfilate.it/img/ACFxKzRDK.jpg Is Homer Simpson the best example you can think of? Here is a "funny" image of Selma & Patty dressed in burlesque lingerie. http://worldwide-web.com/JeffreyBabad/Simpsons/PattySelma/selmapatty.gif It's just a cartoon. Both men's and women's bodies can be funny or sexy, it depends on the context of the image.
  24. Two things: First: "is there something in women's body which makes its visibility sexual..." Um, Yeah. They're called breasts. In your picture of Homer Simpson, is there an obvious bulge in his pants? My guess is no. Moreover, Homer Simpson is emasculated and portrayed as ignorant and slow and just plain ridiculous. He is, in many ways, a caricature of masculinity. Marge, on the other hand, is trying to keep it all together - for the most part, she is "Everywoman." (All this said, I don't know that most people consider a picture of Marge in a bikini as vulgar or sexualized. Betty Boop, on the other hand...) Second: if Homer was in better shape - sported a six-pack instead of a beer-gut - perhaps we'd find his image in underwear sexy. I guess both of my points are the same point: women do have a history of sexualization and objectification in the US; it's undeniable. In your example, Marge is thin with luxurious hair. Homer is a balding, pot-bellied oaf who is still somehow charming. What would we think if we saw Marge's sister Selma in a bikini? I don't know... maybe we could illustrate or discuss this question with greater sophistication if we weren't considering cartoons... which, after all, are ALL amusing... like, what if we were discussing male and female Hollister or A&F models? They're all scantilly clad... and do we consider them, the boys AND girls, equally vulgar or sexualized? Or do we consider one more scandalous than the other?
  25. I think it depends on WHO is in their underwear. Also, to a degree, I have to say that women are more sexualized in their images. With the exception of some of the "empowering" brassiere ads and support garment ads, I have yet to see an image of a woman in her underwear that isn't attempting to put forth the woman's sexuality. And LOL as much of the Simpsons' show I have seen, i don't remember seeing Marge in her underwear. Homer I remember a lot though. Thanks for giving me something to think about...
  26. I think Holmer Simpson would be funny no matter what.... Consider this would you add a person who has a nude hunk in his display pic???? And to be honest Marge is kind of sexy.
  27. ? I think you are reading too much into this. There are times when a man in his underwear is also made to look sexy and appealing, and times when a woman in her underwear is played for laughs rather than titillation. Naked people are not always naked for sexual reasons, regardless of their gender. I think the difference is that men are even more turned on by what they see than women are. They're even more visual than we are, which is why there is a bigger market for female nudity as a sexy thing than male nudity. Although it appears that this is changing.
  28. your using cartoons as an example though. And well Homer simpson's character is goofy and fat, so this would naturally be used for humor if this was a real man on a sitcom. I guess it's because it's fine to use an out of shape man's body as humor, whereas, it would be seen as cruel or mean to do the same for an obese woman wearing something skimpy on TV. Why would there be sexual connotations with a cartoon in the first place though?
  29. I don't think men find women in underwear vulgar, I think they find them sexy. The sight of me in underwear invariably drives my husband into a positive frenzy of lust. As far as I know most men feel like that.
  30. Because these images are aimed at men.
