On the new MSN messeger, Display Pictures seem to "flash" a lot...?

I recenly downloaded the latest version of MSN, where the DPs are on the Left instead of the Right. Me and my frend have been noticing that at random intervals, the DPs seem to flash or shine. Is there a reason for this??? What does it mean?

1. i noticed that too!! usually when someone updates their status, it flashes. like their subname, and stuff.. its weird. and rather annoying.
