is there a reason msn live messenger for windows changes my display picture to a lower res version?

i was happy with the new msn, animated display pics was a good addition but i have noticed that after i log out and in again my display pic is suddenly more blurry and looks like its had colour taken from it. is there a way to fix this? and is this issue because it saves them as gifs because of the new ability to have animated ones

1. I'm guessing they change the quality to be able to transfer that image across the web with greater speed as larger files take more time. There may be a way around it, but is it really worth the time?
