What does the phone prank "and prince albert is in the can" mean?

There are certain sayings or jokes on Television that people never finish due to their universal nature, like "bringing a horse to water," or "when in rome." This line is popular in TV shows for telephone pranks along with "is your refrigerator running?" But nobody I know seems to know the full joke of the prince albert line

  1. prince albert used to be a can of cleanser. what made it funny was there was an actual guy prince albert, so when you asked if he was in the can, you were referring to the actual prince being stuck in the can. well, it was supposed to be funny. really it wasn't.
  2. Prince Albert is on a roll
  3. It's "Do you have prince Albert in a can?....Then you better let him out!" Ha, ha ... Ha.
  4. i don't know either.
  5. Prince Albert was a pipe tobacco in a oblong can
  6. Prince Albert was a brand of tobacco. It came in a can. So, you'd call someone and ask if they had Prince Albert in a can? By the way, Prince Albert tobacco was extremely popular and most people had a can of it in their homes. So, they'd answer yes, and you'd yell "Well, let him out" ha ha, huh? Well, maybe you had to be 12-years-old!!!
