My Funny Picture

What the heck is in my fish tank?

Okay, I'm going to explain this as best I can without having a picture up. I have a 55 gallon fish tank, and we've found these things, that look like egg sacs or something. If you can imagine, taking one of those baby corns they use in asian food, cutting it lengthwise , and sticking half of it on the side of the tank. The weird thing is, the level on the water has been down about 4-5 inches from the top of the tank (I have a couple of jumpers), and we're finding these things all the way at the top of the tank; out of the water. I've found 3 now within the past week and a half. For the record, I have 5 neon tetras, 2 orange glow fish, 2 marbled mollies, 2 angel fish, 2 snails and 3 big (4-5" long) gold fish. I also have two real lilly pads growing in the tank. Anyone got any ideas what these things are? They're hard-ish (I'm afraid to really squish them). Should we just leave them????

  1. Snail eggs :) What kind of snails do you have? Some do lay their eggs above the water line. Research the type you have and see if that's the case with them. .
  2. There are eggs? Either that or some type of strange fungus is growing. I think the massive overpopulation is another issue. Especially the mixing of tropical and coldwater fish. You should separate the coldwater and the other fish into about 3 tanks or 1 30 gal. tank (for goldfish) and 1 60 gal. tank. Right now it's pretty crowded up.
  3. probably fish eggs. But if you got your fishes spayed or neutered (F>Y>I> you should always spay and neuter your fish) Maybey sea- men
  4. They're most likely the snails. We had 9 snails in the beginning and now we have close to 500 in about 5 months from all the snails.
  5. Definately snail eggs.go here to learn more http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Bug,%20Snails,%20Mystery.htm
  6. Snail eggs. Put a little bit of salt in the water to make sure you don't get over run with snails.
  7. Sounds like Apple Snail eggs: http://www.dlink.org/aqua/image/snail_w_eggs.jpg http://www.agnet.org/images/library/pt2004034f1.jpg Leave them, and they will hatch, and you'll soon be overrun with many baby apple snails (which will probably in turn be eaten by the Goldfish). But you can just take them off and throw them away. Once the snails start laying they'll continue.
