How do I make display pictures small on Windows Live Messenger?

I'm aware that you can click a little arrow near the display pics, and select small, but the pictures don't stay small once I've closed and re-opened a contact window. Is there any way to always make these pictures small? Also, I'm totally using the new new new Live Messenger. The one with only "Available", "Busy", "Away" and "Appear Offline".
