Dumbbell Exercises?

Hi there, Just bought some dumbbells today and wondered if anybody knew of any good sites which explained exercises that you can do with them. Ones with pictures in of the exercises taking place would be really great, rather than just text explaining how to do them. Oh and btw on a side note, the fitness store I bought them from tried to sell me some of those weird formula powdres for muscle gain, I just replied "can't I just eat meat and fish", are they a con? Isn't it just better to eat a healthy amount of protein? Cheers All!

  1. As you finish your run and walk through the gym, you notice some guys and girls working out with dumbbells or crazy-looking weight machines. "Not for me," you think as you pass by. Then you notice that most of the kids in the weight room aren't muscle-bound football players. Most of them look like you - only more toned. What Is Strength Training? Strength training is much more than quickly lifting a few weights. When you strength train with weights, you're using your muscles to work against the extra pounds; this strengthens and increases the amount of muscle mass in your body by making your muscles work harder than they're used to. Regular aerobic exercise, such as running or using a stationary bike, makes your muscles use oxygen more efficiently and strengthens your heart and lungs. Most people who work out with weights typically use two different kinds: free weights, which include barbells and dumbbells, and weight machines, which are made by companies like Nautilus. Machines are often designed to help you isolate and work on a specific muscle; free weights usually work a group of muscles at the same time.
  2. my partner uses protein powder from the health shop, and it worked for him. He was very slim, so he needed to consume more protein than the average person so he could build himself up. He eats a lot of high protein foods, but finds he needs more, so the powder does the trick.
  3. try looking on ebay for ebooks on fitness. Many of them use illustrations and as for the formula, it essensially gives you lots of the nutrients you should be getting, healthy eating lets you build strength etc BUT you are doing a LOT more muscle work so need a much higher intake of protien and nutrients.
  4. yea don't buy in2 the whole formula thing its a con u only need so much protein, it goes by ur weight there is a formula 4 this not sure if its 1 gram of protein 4 every kilo u weigh. all the extra protein is just waste. was reading som of the other answers there n couldnt help adding to mine ,the reason u need protein is when u lift weights it tears ur muscles n thats wer the protein comes in it fills in the tears n lets u build muscle. also thats y when u train u must give urself a days rest 2 let this process happen or u will b tearing the same muscles daily n the protein wont get a chance 2 work. p.s if u want 2 tone when ur lifting weights start light n do a lot of rep's this will tone u up plus it get's ur muscles in good shape 4 lifting heavier weights good luck n have fun.
  5. The best thing you can do is get some personal training. 2 hours would be enough, and my community centre does it for £3 for 1/2 hour. If you cannot afford it go to the library and find a book. Yes, it is expensive to get protein from protein supplements. A high protein diet is good, nuts are excellent.
  6. I use this site. It has free guides to almost every possible excercise. Each guide has a picture and explanations. Just look for the muscle group you want to target, then look for anything that has Dumbell in the name of the excercise. http://www.shapefit.com/training.html
