My Funny Picture

What book am I thinking of?

This is really bugging me, I read this when I was a little kid and had a funny story abouot it, but can't think of the title. It's a children's picture book. There's this dog, colorede like a golden retriever and he lives woth this boy. He wants to be less normal (I think?) and he turns into this weird combination of animals and stuff, and I think knights go looking for him, but in the end, he returns to his owner. I think the title is some long made-up word. I believe the author wrote many otther children's picture books.
