My Funny Picture

Is there a law against public displays containing pictures involving nudity, racial mutilation, violence ect?

A group in my school likes to put up public displays depicting human mutilation, nudity, infant corpses, racial persecution including families of African American slaves strung from gallows and piles of burning Jewish bodies from WW2. I don't enjoy these graphic images so I try to stay indoors during their week of display and I don't eat in the public eating areas that they are situated outside of. However, there is a daycare for kinds in the ages of ~1-4 not 30 meters away who routinely travel about campus either with their daycare attendants or their parents who take them to eat at the building where these images are situated (it's our central campus area). This group has been asked to turn their display's inward or move to another location on campus but they say it violates their right to free speech. Is there not a law that prevents the public display of a graphic nature from being in forcible contact with children? You think they could rate it 14A or something.

Public Comments

  1. Let Bill O'riely have crack at 'em. Might put 'em in his pin heads and patriots segments. Anyway it depends. If they are using private places to display they may need permission. If in public it can be defimation of public domain. This sounds like a moral issue. Who has the right to do or say what at the expense of another. This is a problem in society today as there are so many who think they can do or say what ever they want regardless of how it affects others. Moral decency. Respect for others. Goes along ways.
  2. Without knowing what state you're referring to it's difficult to comment about what your state law says. Something that you mentioned..."freedom of speech and expression"...is one thing. However, if that freedom of speech or expression incenses the general public most states have laws that would prohibit such a display in public. I would contact the school board or your local law enforcement agency who may be able to provide you with guidance! Best wishes.
  3. That's sick! First of all, if it is an individual, they can be charged with public indecency. If there is nudity of children, there are laws against child pornography. Owning and distributing child porn is not covered under free speech. If you are at a public college campus, you need to speak to someone as high up on the ladder as possible. You can tell them it violates your religion to see photos of jews being slaughtered in WW2 as non educational but it is being done to intimidate others. Lastly, if nothing else works, call a tv news station. They would jump on a story like this in no time flat. That'll get it and the school bad publicity, the school has the right to designate areas that are safe for personal displays, so this group needs to have a private meeting area. Good luck!
  4. A school has the right to curtail some examples of free speech and in the case you describe has the responsibility to do so. You should check the city, county, and state laws for such a restriction. You could also organize a protest against the display of these images where young children can view them. Their right to "free speech" ends where it interferes with others right to the same.
