How to activate contact display pictures in Live Messenger?

Hello, I have just upgraded my harddrive with a fresh install of windows XP but now my live messenger (latest version) no longer shows contact display pictures in the contact list. It was a very useful feature that I used to identify people by face instead of just their names (I'm bad with names) and addition to that it also displayed all their personal quotes beneath their names. How do I get this back?? Please advise! As a clarification, I am talking about showing display pictures in the *contact list*, not message windows. I have already enabled the "Show display pictures from others" option and restarted the program but it didn't work.
