Where would Henry VIII be placed in hell according to Divine Comedy? I am currently reading the Divine Comedy and am curious what some people who have a firm grasp of it think about historical figures who excisted after Dante's lifetime and where they would have ended up in hell. Henry VIII is just one of many figures in history between the early 14th century and now. Any comments welcome.
Can someone reccomend a plain English version of The Divine Comedy? I am interested in classic literature like this but I have to be honest--I have a hard time understanding some of the books the way they were originally written. I'm trying to read The Divine Comedy now. Does anyone know of a more straightforward version I can read, so that when I read the real thing I can understand it better? Thanks.
Are there specific groups that believe the Divine Comedy to be true? So I'm reading Dante's Divine Comedy in school, and I was wondering, since Dante says he received his book inspiration from a vision are there people who believe and follow it like others would the Bible? There's probably certain people who do personally, but what about specific groups or churches? thanks
Has Charles Bagot Caley translated the other two volumes of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy? Does anyone here know if Charles Bagot Caley has translated the other two volumes of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy? I've just finished reading his version of Inferno and i'm interested in buying the other two volumes. I've searched for hours on the net but cant for the life of me find out if he ever even translated Purgatorio and Paradisio. If anyone here is able to help me out i'd be very grateful.
Is this quote anywhere in the Divine Comedy? My friends and i have a bet over whether "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" is found anywhere in Dante's Divine Comedy. I would like any help possible, if it is the specific canto would be heplful.
Any books similiar that decribe hell in great detail like Divine Comedy? I have enjoyed Divine Comedy by Dante and i am in the fifth level of hell: Wrath and Sloth I love the detail and the description: In the swamp like water of river Styx, the wraithfull fight each other on the surface, and the sullen or slothful lie gurgling beneath the water. Its very interesting and i would like some other books that describe hell in this detail.
Is there any way I can read the Divine Comedy online? I already read Divine Comedy, but I want to re-read it online, instead of going to my public library to check it out. Does anyone here know a website where I can read it? YA suggested this category to me so I’m very sorry if I’ve posted in the wrong section. :)
Why are Greek gods in Dante's Divine Comedy? Dante is clearly a christian by his statements in the Divine Comedy. So from Dante's standpoint, what is the reason for mentioning and revering Greek gods and goddesses? And NO, I am NOT looking for responses from angry atheists or angry christians. Period. Keep it to yourself. Whether or not the story is fiction is irrelevant. Whether or not God exists to you is irrelevant. I want an answer to my question, not petty bickering.
is there a modern English version of The Divine Comedy? I haven't done enough research yet so I thought I start here. Just wondering if it's a pain in the ass to read the original version and if there's an easier modern version that's out (Divine Comedy for dummies? lol) thanks to anyone who replies!

Why is "The Divine comedy" by Dante Alighieri has the word 'Comedy'? For those who knows or read the "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri. Why did he ever put the word 'Comedy' in the title, if the story was more about his dream of seeing and passing through the 9 circles of hell, the island of purgatory and the 8 planet heavens. We know the word 'Comedy' means something that has to do with laughter, joy or happiness. But the story was far from anything happy or has comedy.

What is the best translation of the Divine Comedy? I read Robert Pinsky's translation of The Inferno when I had to read it for my Lit class and although I loved his translation I cannot find any translations of Purgatorio or Paradisio done by him. Who would you recommend as providing the next best translation?
Why should I read The Divine Comedy? I have to read the Divine Comedy for class, but I don't see the point. I guess I'll find the Cliff Notes or something, unless there are some good reasons to read it. What do you think?
What is the best site to read the divine comedy by Dante Alighieri? i beat the game dante's inferno and heard that there was a poem that it was based off of that was a lot better so i checked it out but i see all these sites that say their poem was translated by a different person. How do I cite from the Divine Comedy using MLA? I know there is a specific way to cite Shakespeare, but what about for Dante? Someone asked this question before but I am not looking for a way to cite a translation, but Dante specifically. Thanks a lot!
What translation of the Divine Comedy would you recommend? I know that the opinion of a "best" translation is subjective too opinion, so I'll just kind of give a description of what I'm looking for. I'll just be straight forward and say that I couldn't enjoy reading it before because the translation I was reading was a bit dated. I dont expect prose to be simplistic but I couldnt get very far because it was written in like Old English. Can anyone recommend a translation a bit more modern?
Is Dante describing a spherical earth in the Divine Comedy? In the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, Dante describes the nine circles of Hell as a funnel shaped cave with its bottom point at the center of the earth. However, Dante wrote the Divine Comedy between 1309 and 1321; this was before proof that the earth was round. I realize I am not really asking a question here, but any comments, discussion or information would be extremely valuable. I apologize for the misleading wording of my question. I should have said "Why is Dante describing...". And more importantly, why did The Divine Comedy rise to fame so quickly when Dante blatantly opposed the accepted scientific theories of the time?
Why does Dante use "our" in the first canto of the Divine Comedy? Dante opens the Divine Comedy with "Nell mezzo del cammin di nostra vita" which translates to "In the middle of the walk of our life." Why does he use our when it seems that he is referring only to himself (the middle of life - at the time Dante was 35, half of the biblically alloted lifespan)?
Is there a different formate to read The Divine Comedy In? I have been wanting to read the Comedy for a long time now and have been browsing around at which to buy (there are a LOT of translations and such) So I was curious is there a version that is NOT written in the "poem" style? As in only 3 words a or so a line For example: "dsdsdsd dsdsd sdsd sdfasfff dfdfd dfdsf|" A flowing story would be nice and easier to read Thanks
Question about The Divine Comedy and Hell? Okay so in Hell, the violent are placed 'higher up' than the fraudulent. Meaning the fraudulent are 'worse' than the violent. Why is this? It is possible that they are there because being false requires more will than being violent. For example, crimes of passion can be commit on impulse. IN the context of his metaphor. I am simply wondering why the fraudulent are considered to be worse than those who are violent. In our society, a murderer would be considered to be far more sinister than someone who lies, generally.
What is the purpose of Dante's Divine Comedy? I have to write an essay on this. All I can come up with is 1) he wanted to write something based on theology and logic to gain fame 2) had nothing better to do 3) praise/put down people he did/didn't like. I don't think any of these are very insighful. I was hoping someone would be able to point me in a better direction.
What is the best translation for The Divine Comedy? I am very interested in this book and I plan to read it, but which version is the best translation. Some say John Ciardi, but i would like to hear some more. Which version one is most understandable? Which one gives the best mental image? etc.

Divine Comedy- Who should I pick to put in the level for envy? I'm doing an argumentative paper for school and we must choose one political/public figure that would represent someone that would go to that level in hell, my level chosen being envy. So who would be better.. Hitler, being envious of jews? or Cassius being envious of Julius Caesar becoming king?
